About the NCLEX-PN exam

Who takes the NCLEX-PN?

Graduates of approved practical or vocational nursing programs take it to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN) or, in California and Texas, a licensed vocational nurse (LVN). You apply to your state board of nursing, register with Pearson VUE and can schedule the exam once the board makes you eligible.

How is the NCLEX-PN structured?

It is a computerized adaptive test with 85 to 150 items and a 5-hour limit that includes breaks. Every exam has 15 unscored pretest items and three clinical judgment case studies of six items each. Items follow the 2026 test plan's Client Needs categories, from Coordinated Care (18 to 24%) to Health Promotion and Maintenance (6 to 12%). You can't go back to an earlier item.

What score do I need to pass?

There is no percentage to hit. The computer picks each item based on your earlier answers and stops when it is 95% sure your ability is above or below the passing standard set by NCSBN. Results are pass or fail. Our practice exams are fixed-length, so we use 70% correct (60 of 85) as a benchmark.

How is the NCLEX-PN different from the NCLEX-RN?

The PN exam tests entry-level practical nursing: collecting data, reinforcing teaching, assigning tasks to assistive personnel and caring for clients whose outcomes are predictable, while reporting changes to the RN or provider. Its first category is Coordinated Care rather than the RN exam's Management of Care. Our questions keep every correct answer within PN scope.

Do these questions look like the real exam?

Ours are all single-best-answer multiple choice. The real NCLEX-PN also uses case studies and formats such as select all that apply, matrix, drop-down, highlight, bow-tie and drag-and-drop. Our questions practice the same clinical judgment and content, such as prioritizing, assigning care and spotting complications, but you should also try the NCLEX tutorial and sample items on nclex.com to get used to those formats.

How much does the exam cost?

NCSBN lists the NCLEX registration fee as $200 for US licensure, rising to $350 for registrations made on or after February 1, 2027. Your board of nursing also charges its own licensure fee. Check nclex.com and your board for current fees.

Is this the official exam?

No. This is practice material to help you prepare. The NCLEX is developed by NCSBN and given at Pearson VUE test centers. This site is not affiliated with NCSBN, Pearson VUE or any nursing board, and our questions are not real exam questions.
